Almost in the 3rd trimester…where has time gone?

I’ll be 26 weeks this weekend. And then I’ll be in the third trimester the following week. It’s scary how fast this pregnancy is flying by! I always remembered my pregnancy with Caleb dragging by and feeling like it was forever before he was here. But, I guess things are different when I’m chasing around a toddler and doing things like planning his 3rd birthday party :)

Things have been slowing down and I’ve been taking some time to do some crafty things which I have missed so much. I recently made my own lip balm which has been great since they always seem to be in short supply in this house. A few simple ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax along with some essential oils and you’ve got yourself some lip balm! I bought some lip balm tubes on Amazon and made several kinds, but my fav are the chocolate mint ones I made!

At 24 weeks, we made it to viability! It’s a milestone I’m glad we made…one little step at a time. I read in my pregnancy book that the youngest micro-preemie ever to survive was 21 weeks old. That is just so amazing!

I also treated myself to a hair cut. First one during the pregnancy! The overgrown a-line was kind of driving me nuts so I had the stylist even it all out. I actually think one side is longer than the other which kind of annoys me and it’s at an awkward length. I just hope it grows (come on, prenatals) and then I can get one more cut before Jenna makes her arrival.

Last week, we had two snow days so Steve got to stay home with us and play! Early on during the storm, we went sledding down a small hill in front of our house. Caleb has so much fun and apparently, so did Steve. It was his second time sledding EVER!

That night we roasted marshmallows in the fire place and made s’mores…nom nom! And speaking of food, I’ve been eating a second dinner or snacking before bed almost daily. Jenna must be going through a growth spurt because I nearly doubled my weight gain (4 lb gain to an 8 lb gain in 2 weeks). We have an ultrasound on Tuesday to check her growth since she’s a bit on the small side so I can’t wait to hear if she’s gotten any bigger!

Caleb and I are in MA at the moment–just in time for Chinese New Year! Originally, Steve had planned to fly to TX and help his mom pack up the last of her house and drive back to MD during the first weekend of February so I told my mom I’d come up with Caleb. Well, Steve ended up making that trip two weeks earlier during MLK weekend so I told my mom we’d still come up. It’d give Caleb a chance to see everyone for his 3rd birthday (a few weeks early) before Jenna makes her debut. At least Steve can watch the Super Bowl in peace even if the Patriots aren’t in it.

I made the drive up here with Caleb yesterday is pretty decent time despite not one, but two accidents with overturned vehicles (one SUV and 2 semi trucks). I was able to drive 6 1/2 hours straight before stopping for gas and a small dinner and then an hour later, Caleb told me he had to poop (best timing, I was 3/4 mile from a rest area) so that added some more time, but it took 8 1/2 hours total.

My mom has already taken Caleb to Toys R Us so Caleb could pick out his birthday present and also got Miss Jenna a few outfits and her first bathing suit! I could die from the cuteness.

Anyway, off to bed soon. Hope everyone is staying warm!

Sewing projects, anatomy scan and meeting a doula

During the week of Christmas/New Years, Steve had a modified schedule where he had a few days on and a day off so I took advantage of having him home and started some sewing projects! My plan has always been to make Jenna’s nursery bedding. Crib sheets, blankets, quilts, changing pad covers–all that stuff is easy. I don’t plan on using a bumper and I will probably reuse the crib skirt that I already have, but if not, I can always make one :)

I bought a new sewing machine as a gift to myself! It’s this one by Brother (I paid $120 for a warehouse box–never opened, but the box was a bit dented. Machine was fine!) mostly because it has more power, it’s computerized and it had a few extras like a quilting table and could do simple lettering. My current one was a Black Friday deal that Steve lovingly bought for me years ago and spray painted the cover pink because I told him I wanted a pink sewing machine. It’s been used plenty, but it can’t handle thick layers and broken needles have come flying at my EYES on more than one occasion.

Anyway, over the course of a week, I stayed up late on more than one occasion to sew three quilts, a big crib minky blanket, changing pad cover and crib sheet! The new sewing machine is awesome and it’s sooo much easier to thread the bobbin and it can handle multiple layers.

My 1st quilt using a disappearing 9 quilt block pattern! The back of the quilt is the bird fabric with a bamboo batting.

So proud of my 1st quilt that I signed it. I hope she keeps it forever.

Crib sheet that I tested out on the only crib sized mattress we had in the house–Caleb’s bed!

Saw a jelly roll fabric pack at JoAnn’s so decided to pick it up and try my hand at a jelly roll jam quilt. Not perfect, but pretty! I put it together with bamboo batting and the back has a solid yellow fabric with pink and green chevron fabric.

Not pictured is another baby quilt, but it’s basically a smaller version of the minky blanket I made with quilted blocks of the same fabric. I’m hoping to start the nursery (painting, furniture assembly, etc.) by March, finish by April and be ready by May!

We had another snow day and Steve’s car got stuck for two days! He ended up taking my car one day to go take his GRE’s (yay for an SUV with AWD). It was sooo cold, but Caleb wanted to go play in the snow so I said ok. We made it an hour (well, I did, before I said it was time to go in). The snow was so powdery that it was hard to make a snowman so I shoveled a mound and called it a snow volcano…lol.

This week, I am 22 weeks along! I finally got to see Jenna kicking from the outside and took a video of it. She loves to party late, late at night and when I wake up. When I tell Caleb that Jenna is kicking me, he says, “Jenna, don’t kick Mommy. It’s not nice!”  He’s too funny :)

22 week update

I had my anatomy scan at 22 1/2 weeks. The actual ultrasound was done by the OB and he was very detailed in describing what we were looking at–it was really neat! Everything looked good: saw the heart’s 4 chambers, umbilical cord, no cleft lip, kidneys looked good, spine looked good. She is measuring a bit small–11th %tile. He said anything above 10th %tile is normal, but since she’s on the cusp, he wanted to do another ultrasound at my next appointment just to make sure she’s growing. She’s a lil’ peanut!

I asked him about my weight gain (or lack of, really). At this point, I’ve gained only 2 lbs. He said that my fluid levels were good and placenta was good so she’s growing and healthy–just to keep doing what I was doing and not to worry. It was reassuring to hear that! It’s just so funny how different pregnancies can be. By the time I was 23w with Caleb, I was already up 18 lbs!

I got two generic print outs. In Austin, we got a DVD with video, pics and lots of pics! Not that I’m complaining, but just interesting to see how different offices do things. I’m just glad I have a healthy baby.

Later that day, Caleb started his first parent-free, instructor led swim class. We had been going to one swim school for months, but it was a “mommy and me” type setting and I think he was bored. He couldn’t advance to the next level until he was 3 and potty trained. We told them he was already potty trained, but the age thing was the restriction and they seemed pretty strict about it. We tried out this swim school and the class he’s doing starts at 3, but they said he was close enough that he could try it. The limit the class to 4 students, but he just happened to be the only one there that night so he got a private 1 on 1 class. Steve and I sat across the pool and watched him–he warmed up very quickly to the instructor and did sooo well! Even the instructor said he took direction very well and will learn very quickly so we were super proud of our lil’ guy.

Today, Caleb and I met up with Steve for lunch before meeting with a potential doula. I didn’t have one with Caleb, but had been contemplating one with this lil’ one especially since I’m going to try and shoot for a med-free birth (crazy, I know). She seemed really nice and also includes birth photography on the side so that’s a plus! I’m going to meet with another doula and then decide.

Anyway, that’s what’s going on here! Tomorrow, we’re carpooling with friends to Harrisburg, PA, for a farm show and meeting up with other friends. Then, I have two newborn sessions. Never a dull moment here :)

Project 366, Day 9

Day 9
Caleb watched the snow fall today!

Caleb woke up at 7am this morning, but once I brought him into bed with me and nursed him, he fell asleep until 9:30am. Woot! I love lazy days :o)

Steve came home for lunch so I whipped up a quick meal with what we had left in the fridge–baked haddock and green beans. Steve watched Caleb as I got ready since we needed to make another grocery run. I put Caleb down for his nap and when Steve left to go back to work, it start to snow!

I snapped a few pictures in our tiny backyard of the snow before Caleb woke up. I brought him to the window by our sofa and he was just in awe of the snow! So far, it’s been a mild winter, but wonder if that’s all about to change. I want to dress him up in a snowsuit and take him sledding!

Anyway, once we were done watching the snow, we ventured out to the commissary where Steve met up with us. We spent almost $200 on food, but we should be good for a while. I made steaks, quinoa & green beans (wanted to finish off the bag) for dinner before relaxing for the night. I also discovered lil’ boy LOVES clementines! He ate three of them before I cut him off–I guess bananas are no longer his favorite :oP

Project 365, Day 338

Day 338 - a camera backpack for China from Kimmy!
I got a camera backpack from Kimmy for Christmas!

The issue with ordering so much from Amazon is that when my friends order things off my wish list and have it shipped to me, I think it’s something that I ordered! Well, I opened the box thinking it was one of the 3 I am expecting and lo and behold, it’s a camera backpack that Kimmy bought off my wishlist!

I opted for a camera backpack for when we travel to China next year (and forgoing a purse altogether). I currently have a large messenger style camera back, but it pulls my shoulder when all of my gear is in it. I’m definitely not bringing everything with me over there and since part of the trip will involve hiking 8 hours to the Simatai and Jinshanling areas of the Great Wall which is by the mountains aka STEEP, I definitely wanted to be comfortable with my equipment. I chose this backpack because it’s not too big (but fits the 4 lenses with room for 1 more, my camera, wallet, memory card, etc), is a backpack style to distribute the weight with chest and waist straps (the waist strap lets you wear it and access your camera/lenses w/o having to take off the bag and putting it down), and most importantly, it opens from the backside (so no pickpockets will make off with my stuff). It’s also got a strap for a tripod and some external pockets, but I dont plan on bringing one nor an external flash either (I’ve read that flash photography isnt allowed in temples, musuems anyway–good thing I got some fast glass).

The backside and straps are very padded and it’s comfortable. It’s definitely the perfect traveling camera bag for me!

Today was a chilly, chilly day in TX! The high was only 39*f and it actually snowed! Just a lil’ flurry and nothing stuck, but still, people were overreacting. Schools had early releases so people with kids left early. And some people left early anyway because of the snow. One manager called me at 3:30pm and was actually surprised to hear me still there. He asked why I didnt leave early–I asked why I should have? He said because of the snow and I just laughed. Nothing stuck, it snowed for 20 mins and then the skies were blue & the sun came out.

After work, I checked out a new pizza place in town called Garlic Breath Pizza. I thought the name was clever so I orderd a pizza to go. It was just ok–I still miss Papa Gino’s *sigh* Just something about the crust didnt really work for me.

I think I’m going to heat up some of my soup for dinner–it’s going to be in the 20’s tonight and the house is freezing!

pictures of a blah day at work

I only ended up staying at work for 6 hours. We could have left earlier, but I felt obliged to at least leave my queue ‘o work some what fulfilled. I drank lots of hot chocolate and orange Tazo tea to keep warm. Sitting by a window, it’s a lot colder! Maybe because they’re not 100% sealed and I can feel a tiny draft? Ah well. I got the best view of the parking lot where I usually park at so if anyone tries to mess with my ride, I’ll know (which was blocked off because it’s now a skating rink).

actually…I work up in a tree

I went outside while it was snowing and tried to take better pictures of the snow there with minimal luck before I started to freeze. I didnt bring any of my heavy winter coats down to TX (all in MA), except for one goose down which I have no idea where it is..ha!

snow in Austin..prooooof

Lunch was pretty good…I dont know if I’m saying that because it really was or because I didnt eat breakfast before I came in. The BBQ was pretty good…the Chinese was ok though my mom makes way better beef & broccoli! And after lunch, people started to filter out and go home, while I tried to stick it out a bit longer. I headed home before dark because I didnt want to mess around with black ice.

meh, booored and I find my hair to look more like a wig everyday.

In other news, Steve finds out his R&R dates tomorrow! He emailed me today saying, “I’m being told I should be back by the 1st or 2nd.” I am TOTALLY confused because did he mean be back in Iraq by March 1st or 2nd? Or be back in the US by Feb 1st or 2nd? Like goddamit, boy, give me specifics! I’ll find out everything tomorrow!

Ok, going to huddle under the covers…the heat’s blasting and I’m still freezing! I’ve even resorted to wearing fleecy froggie faced socks..lol. Gnite!
