birthday weekend recap – a real update!

Hi all!

Sorry I’ve been so out of the loop on my LJ–I’ve been so busy that LJ kind of takes a seat on the back burner and I still need to update about China. Oi! I’m hoping that with Steve in school, I can finally catch up on everything once and for all. So, hopefully, I make up some ground during the week :o)

birthday10
Thanks Danbo!

My 28th birthday was last Thursday! Work was pretty good and Misti misti_k took me out to lunch at NoRth where we were introduced to the best calamari salad! When I came home, Steve and Brian arrived shorly after from San Antonio. We went to Wink which is a fabulous restaurant for dinner that even had a happy birthday message for me on the menu! The service was spot on and the food was wonderful. Steve and Brian both had apps since their portions aren’t huge and they’re guys. I ordered skate for dinner which I always wanted to try, but never could find it–it was fabulous! Steve got a duck that was amazing and Brian got lamb chomps. We got the Wink trio for dessert which had lemon meringue, creme brulee and their flourless chocolate cake. Brian got the chocolate soup.

Valentine’s Day weekend and then some

Wow, I’ve been ignoring LJ. Even Steve mentioned to me that I hadn’t updated in a long time which is true. Hopefully, I will be able to get back into the swing of things once Steve’s leave is over which is still a good 2 weeks away. Until then, I’m enjoying having a house-husband around to cook and clean while I’m at work :o)

So, how was everyone’s Valentine’s Day weekend? Ours was GREAT! Friday night after work, we went to the Alamo Drafthouse to watch Master Pancake’s rendition ofTransformers. Steve was laughing non-stop–sometimes I would look at him and be like, “seriously? was it that funny?” It’s always a good time at the Alamo…especially during the mid-movie intermission.

Things you shouldn’t transform into…People’s magazine as Burt Reynolds or a toilet…lol.

Saturday, Steve cooked breakfast before we went to Academy Sports to load up on electrolyte chews and jelly beans in addition to cold weather wear for the 1/2 marathon since it was going to be 38*f in the morning. I also bought running socks which was GREAT because I did not get one blister :oD We then ventured down to the Austin Marathon Expo for our packet pick up and to browse around. I was very tempted to buy a 13.1 magnet for my car, but I didn’t want to jinx myself in case I didn’t finish! I did buy a shirt though and we sampled all sorts of drinks and chews.

Steve had a surprise for me which was dinner and dancing with Misti misti_k and Nate! We met at the Arthur Murray studio which we had a tango lesson. It was fun because this is really the first time Steve and I danced with some sort of formality. Tango was fun though he said I tended to steer to my right and he would always try and correct me. I told him to lead better :oD Then, we had dinner at the Melting Pot at a table with 2 other couples. As Misti pointed out in her entry, they were probably the coolest couples of the bunch because our table would be talking while everyone else was silent. We were also the last table to leave…lol. It was a great night planned out by Steve :oD

The next morning, we we were up BRIGHT and early at 4:45am to head to the marathon! The packet advised that we be downtown by 5:30am so we did and scored free parking. We waited in the car for about 45 minutes which was good because I TOTALLY forgot to charge my phone and it was down to 30%. But, by the time 6:15am roll around, it was at 90% and we were ready to go. We waited 20 min in line for a port-o-potty before lining up. The slow runners are in the back so we went to find the group that ran at about a 12 min/mile. Before we knew it, the sun was coming up and the race started!

I was doing GREAT until the 8.5 mile mark. Up until then I had been running up the hills and for this particular hill, it was pretty steep so Steve asked if I wanted to walk it. I shook my head no and ran up it. Well, after that, it COMPLETELY exhausted me. For every hill after that, it literally took all of my might to put one foot in front of the other. I took longer water breaks and every once in a while, I would get a second wind and run, but I tired out a lot faster. Thank goodness for those electrolyte chews we bought.

But, then I saw the finish line and I just BOLTED. I threw my hands up in the air as I crossed the finish line because I just completed 13.1 miles. At the finish line, we all got medals and shirts along with food and drinks. I finally did it! Now my next step is a full marathon, but I’m going to do a few more 1/2s before I venture onto 26.2 mile races.

our last weekend together

Steve and I unknowingly spent our last full weekend together already. After work today, Steve called to inform me that his deployment date was pushed up a few days so now he’ll be gone within the week. At first, I thought he was joking, but he was serious. I was mad/sad for a few seconds before it turned to numbness. By now, I should be used to the Army changing things around, but it still sucks when it does. Figures, the day I request time off for Steve’s deployment dates is when it all changes. I’m now hoping to get this Friday and Monday off instead.

And to make matters worse, Steve was almost home when he got a call and has to go back into work. Did I mention we live an hour away from Fort Hood? Yeah, so I may be eating dinner alone tonight. Cant they throw a bone and let everyone spend what little days left with their families? Especially when I just got robbed of a weekend and then some?

So, in light of things I’ll recap our weekend which was great :o ) I was just hoping for one more together, but it is what it is…

Friday night when Steve finally got home from work, he wanted burgers for dinner. At this point, whatever Steve wants, Steve gets since he wont get any choices for the next year. So, he decides on Steak ‘n Shake where we both get burgers for dinner–though I tried to be healthy with a salad and cottage cheese instead of fries…not that it helped much because I had a milkshake, too.

Afterwards, we go to the outlets where I said, “hey! I can get that Coach purse I’ve had my eye on” (I was there a few days ago and they had SUPER cute purses for 50% off). Steve gives me this look and then confesses that he was going to get me something else, but if I wanted a new purse, then I could get one. He had this very sweet plan to buy me a diamond necklace and “propose” to me with it :o ) I never really had an official proposal before we got married so I told him before I die, I want a real proposal. I dont care if I’m 100 years old and on my death bed, I want one! So, apparently he had a plan to do this all before our vow renewals, but work was so busy–he didnt have time.

We go to the outlets and we stop at Zales to take a peek to see if anything caught my eye. Aside from the humongo sparkley diamonds which was out of budget, we walked out empty handed, but not for long since Coach was right next door. Steve was a good sport and would hold my purse as I tried practically every one in the store. I thought about getting this ridiculously huge tote, but Steve said it was TOO big…bleh. After making a few more rounds, I got this purple trimmed purse–cute! I’m trying to branch out in color and plus I could use my Coach scarf with it :o P

lots of exterior storage so I dont have to stuff everything in the middle

The outlets closed shortly after so we just headed home and went to bed–we were both still exhausted and were not caught up from our lack of sleep from Vegas.

Saturday, I woke up early and put the Mariner up for sale on craigs list. When Steve woke up, we had a plan to go to the post office to get our passports. We had breakfast at the Eastside Cafe and then went to the post office–only to find out the passport offices were closed! I misread it online and by the time we realized we could have gone to the one in Pflugerville, it had already closed…phooey. We went ahead and got our pictures taken at CVS so at least we’ll be ready for either Friday or Saturday.

We went back to the house where we did some cleaning up and then relaxed before getting ready to head downtown to meet Carl & Milota (Carl works in the same batallion as Steve) for dinner at the Melting Pot. Steve made the reservations and didnt request any specific server, but guess who we got? LEAH! Figures the times we didnt request her, we get her :o ) I feel like it was only last year that we came down and had her as our server when Steve came home from Iraq *sigh* She was great and we were doing a lot of catching up. It was Carl & Milota’s first time there, but they really enjoyed it :o ) Oh! Leah let us in that the next Big Night Out will be MEDITERRANEAN! That was one of our favs :o ) It will be in the menu by March…yay!

Melting Pot with Carl & Milota
4 people + 2 burners = lots of possibilities

After dinner, we met up with some more Army folks–I cant remember their first names–only their last names…lol. We went to go see Ester’s Follies which everyone just loved! They had some new skits so that was entertaining to see. Even the old stuff is still hilarious :o ) After the show, Steve and I headed home since they wanted to hit up the bars and walk around 6th St.

Sunday was my “secret” day where Steve had a surprise itinerary planned. This was also the day he was going to “propose” with the necklace, but since he didnt buy one, it didnt happen. I keep hoping for it though :o ) We woke up, got ready and got in the car. Steve wouldnt tell me where we were going–only that it was for breakfast. When we finally arrived on S. Congress Ave, I asked if we were going to South Congress Cafe and we were! He had been researching on Yelp and it got great reviews so we put our names down (45 min wait) and went to browse an antique shop next door.

Breakfast was really tasty! I got their “green eggs & ham special” which was an omelette with pesto along with cheese, ham, bacon and proscuitto. It also came with a potato pancake and some fruit. Steve got a meaty dish that was also really tasty!

After lunch, we went to location 2 & 3 of my surprise day which was a trip to Lady Bird Wildflower Center and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Musuem. I had never heard of either of those places, but I thought it was really sweet that Steve was researching of places that I had never been to before and thought I’d enjoy.

When we arrived at the Wildflower Center, we found out it was free to get in. When we got in, we found out why–nothing was in bloom! He felt silly because he didnt even think of it being January and the plants being dormant. It’s ok though–we still got to walk around and enjoy the greenery. We’ll come back during R&R when it’s more colorful.

Zab visits & a military ball

Steve’s friend Zab came to town late Friday after picking up one of his friends who recently moved to Austin. We all met at Saltgrass for a great dinner where we got to hear stories of Zab when he was a kid (they went to school together). After dinner, Zab drove his friend, Rachel, back to her apt and Steve and I watched an episode of Lost.

Saturday, the guys woke up to play golf so I spent the day listing the mixers on eBay and making a HUUUUGE batch of peanut butter dog cookies :o) When the guys arrived home, they showered and we went to pick up Rachel and head to the Alamo Drafthouse for Master Pancake Theater’s Christmas Special. It was SO FUNNY!

At one point, they asked the audience if people have spent Christmas outside of the US. They werent very particpatory so I frantically pointed at Steve. We were in the second row so we were easy to spot and they brought the mic over to Steve to ask him about it. The audience slapped when Steve mentioned he was in the Army and they asked what was the best gift he ever received. Steve took a story that happened to one of his soldiers and made it his own–which were a set of balls in a jar. If they were real or not…dunno, but they did an improv song about it called “all I want for Christmas are my 2 front balls”…I’m basically laughing the entire time…it’s awesome!

Testicles for Christmas

After the show, we went to bowl and play shuffleboard at Main Event until the wee hours of the night. I stunk at bowling, but won both times at shuffleboard!

Ash & Julie came to visit!

I seem to be hit or miss with updating LJ these days…sorry guys! But, a few things have happened so I guess I’ll update about them :o)

Ash and Julie came up to our house from San Antonio on Thursday. Julie was actually working in San Antonio and Ash flew down Wednesday night. Steve took Thursday and Friday off, drove down to San Antonio Thursday morning and golfed with Ash while Julie and I were at work. When she got off, they got stuck in traffic and finally made it through Austin at 8:30pm. We had a late dinner at Saltgrass per Ash’s request at 9pm…whew!

Friday, I had to work, so the 3 of them went golfing during a cold front that swept through Austin–I actually wore a coat! When I got off work, Ash was requesting chicken parm so we went to Gino’s…a little italian restaurant in Round Rock that’s seemingly always busy! Their oil/spices dippings for the bread was soo good–better than Carabbas!

After dinner, we killed some time at Target–I got a glob of marinara sauce on my white sweater so that was no good :o( But then it was off to the Alamo Drafthouse downtown to watch Master Pancake theater’s rendition of Back to the Future!

P1070465
Improv during intermission–Doc Brown and Marty McFly

Basically, it’s just like Mystery Science 3K where they comment during the entire movie and it was HILARIOUS! I cannot tell you how many times Steve did his very high-pitched-laughing-so-hard laugh. We’re definitely going to come back when Brian is in town for this :o)

The next day we slept in and went to get breakfast at the Original Pancake House. I decided to go out on a limb and order bacon pancakes. YES, BACON PANCAKES! They were freakin’ awesome. Basically, it’s bits of bacon cooked with pancake batter—YUM! The sweetness of the syrup and the savory bacon pieces were delish! Ash and Julie also enjoyed their pumpkin pancakes and french toast. Steve got Swedish pancakes which were basically crepes.

After that, we went to Ikea where I bought a duvet cover for $15 in a massive clearance bin–score! I also bought spice containers now that I’ve been buying spices in bulk…so much cheaper!

We then went back to the house to relax and ordered88 Minutes on-demand. It was ok–I fell asleep during part of it, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it a lot!

We went to Salt Lick for dinner where I got my usual ribs and sausage (yum) before heading down to Main Event. Jill limeystars do you ever remember Mr Billiards in Framingham? That’s where Ash and Steve used to hang out all of the time so they were looking for a place to shoot pool.

When we arrived, Ash and Julie were in awe of how huge the place was. Julie wanted to play skee ball so we did the arcade stuff before shooting pool, playing shuffleboard, ice hockey, rock climbing and playing video games until 1:30am…fun times!

Halloween & Veronica’s baby shower!

Both Steve and I forgot to set our clocks back last night…oopsies! We’re going to see his parents today and agreed to meet at 10am for breakfast. I woke up early to wrap her gifts and as Steve woke up and was ready to go, it was then that I remembered…daylight savings! It’s ok though…poor guy didn’t sleep well last night and is tired so I told him to go back to bed.

But yay! Steve is home! He came home exactly 4 weeks to the day on Halloween from NTC. What was REALLY weird was that he bought and “I miss you card” and I had bought him an “I miss you card” and guess what? THEY ARE THE SAME CARD! We must be tapped into each other’s brains, but of all the cards to choose from and with him in CA and me in TX!

After work, I came home to finish packing, set up a bowl of candy outside and make sure everything was ready for the petsitter. We drove downtown and checked in at the Driskill Hotel. Our room was nice–COMFY king bed, flat screen TV, granite countertops and Molton Brown toiletries!
